While Mark Stone and Captain Jordan Staal are having career years this season for Anaheim, nobody is shining brighter on the ice in Orange County than defenseman Shea Theodore. He began the season serving a 3-game suspension for attempting to murder San Jose's Mattias Ekholm in the final game of the preseason. Since then, he has been on an absolute tear, racking up 19 goals and 73 assists for 92 points in 74 games, leading the league in points by a defenseman.
“He’s incredible, an absolute pro,” said his 22-year-old defense partner Mikey Anderson in a recent interview. The two have been paired most of the season and seem to have found great chemistry together. Anderson started the season playing for the Anaheim Ducks AHL affiliate and was called up shortly into the season. Ducks Coach Jeff Blashill stated after a recent morning skate:
“We tried everybody else with him early on, but Shea wanted to play with Mikey, so I asked Feltsy to call him up from the minors and we gave him a shot. Glad we did.”
Anderson previously wanted out of Anaheim, stating that he was too far down the depth chart to get any playing time. Now he plays top minutes with one of the best in the league. Theodore’s incredible run may entice Anderson to change his mind and re-sign with the Ducks, which seems like it would be beneficial for both players, and the organization.
Theodore’s offensive game has reached new heights, yet he remains a defensive stalwart on the back end. He is truly having a Norris-caliber season. Unfortunately, the Ducks currently sit 5 points out of the playoffs, with 5 games remaining. The math isn’t in their favour, but Theodore will drag the Ducks into every game to try to make it into the playoffs.
