With the Los Angeles Kings going through a rough 10 game patch a week prior to the PFHL Trade Deadline, its no surprise that GM Chernuka was active.
The first deal leading up to the deadline occurred on April 28th when the Los Angeles Kings traded starting goaltender Jordan Binnington to the Columbus Blue Jackets for starter Ben Bishop. Despite having a bright future, Binnington just couldn't get it done this year, and GM Chernuka turned towards a veteran goaltender in Bishop to help them on their quest for the cup.
The second deal occurred on May 1st, when Los Angeles sent forward Mikhail Grigorenko, prospect Brett Kemp, prospect Alexander Dergachyov, prospect Andre Lee to the Arizona Coyotes for veteran center Joe Thornton. Joe brings extensive leadership and experience to the Kings' 4th line. Joe has already announced he will retire at the end of the season, so he will have one last chance to win a cup.
The third deal occurred on trade deadline day, with the Kings acquiring prospect Joel Nystrom from the Carolina Hurricanes for $250K in cash. Joel was originally a 7th round pick for the Canes. The deal helps refill the prospect cupboard after the Thornton deal.
The fourth deal also occurred on trade deadline day, with the Kings acquiring veteran defenseman Ryan McDonagh, for forward Artem Anisimov, defenseman Jason Demers, prospect Helge Grans. McDonagh is having an excellent year and will help add substantial depth to the top 4 in LA.
The fifth deal occurred on trade deadline day, with the Kings sending minor league defenseman Louie Delpedio to the Capitals for $250K in cash.
The LA Kings are a much different team following the deadline and are poised to go deep in the playoffs.
