With the trad deadline rapidly approaching, we thought it would be good to have a look at possible moves the Calgary Flames might be looking to make. Worth noting, the Flames currently only have $3.6M in cap space so any deals will likely be playing around the edges with the middle 6 or bottom 6 or there will have to be money retained by a trade partner. So here are the top needs for the Flames. Keep in mind, the flames currently sit 3rd in the Pacific with a fairly healthy cushion to the non playoff teams (not jinxing it) so major changes are not to be expected......but you never know!
1. The top need, and there has been no secret made by GM Sean McAndrews, is a high DF penalty killer type. While more rounded players with some offense would be great, the GM of the Flames wants to ensure he can spell Lindholm, Krejci and Oshie more regularly on the PK to avoid too many minutes.
2. Younger depth players. Again GM Sean McAndrews has made no secret that he covets players that can make useful contributions to the pro team but can play big minutes in the AHL. Plyers in the 70-72OV range with reasonable high PO are what the team covets. Players in the Nylander or Timmins mold. These players are difficult to pry free but good young players Like Adam Ruzicka, Girgori Denisenko. higher end prospects like Emelio-Pettersson, and early to mid round picks have been dangled.
3. A goaltender of the future. This is not an immediate need with Mike Smith playing relatively well but the dude is 40. Dustin Wolf is amazing in real life as a top prospect but his small size has always been a potential mark against him (and one can only assume why he was not created with ratings to the other top goalie prospects in the league).
That is really it. The team has some older veterans that they are hesitant to part with, somewhat unexpectedly, because of their performance. Players like Olli Maatta, David Krejci, and Tomas Tatar were all guys that, at the time of the expansion draft, were not really expected to live up to their price tags but they have all played really well and have become.....not untouchable but also unlikely to move at least until the offseason. Still if a REALLY big deal comes along requiring salary to go the other way these names could be included.
Flames GM is rumored to be spending even MORE time in the hot tub as trade talks intensify. It could be an 8 hour shift on deadline day. Happy trading everyone!
