We’re currently in the 9th round of the PFHL Dispersal Draft and as we go further along some rosters are beginning to take shape. With this we can see certain directions some teams are going in, the direction of the San Jose Sharks seems to be that of a cup contender. Let’s recap what they’ve done so far….
1st Round Selection - Connor McDavid
This pick did not surprise anyone, how can you pass up the best player in the league with the 1st overall pick? Some may say salary but GM of the Sharks, Matthew Rensby-Wills, doesn’t believe McDavids $12,500,000 cap hit will hinder his team now or in the future.
“We take everything into consideration, including salary, with our picks and we feel that McDavid is worth his $12.5mil contract and then some. We have a plan in place and if we don’t stray from that plan then this contract will not hurt this team in any way. After looking at the test seasons we believe that if McDavid can stay healthy and be surrounded by talent, he will be the best player in this league for the duration of his career. And we hope that entire career is spent as a San Jose Shark.”
Word is the Sharks and McDavid are currently discussing extending his current 1 year contract…
2nd Round Selection - Roope Hintz
Now this selection definitely had salary in mind. Hintz comes with a $3,150,000 cap hit and slots in perfectly as the second line centre behind McDavid. He’s young, big, and has skill. The Sharks initially pictured him playing along side McDavid but with the draft thinning out at centre later on, they seem to have changed their mind and want to utilize him on the 2nd line.
“We drafted Hintz with the intention of playing him with McDavid but with the way the draft went we now believe it’s best for the team if Hintz centres his own line. He’s a big body and can do everything, a 1-2 punch of McDavid and Hintz is very very sexy.”
Sexy? I was thinking scary…we’re hearing that the Sharks are also working on an extension with Hintz as well.
3rd Round Selection - Alex Nedeljkovic
With back to back picks the Sharks went with another team friendly contract with Ned. A $3,000,000 cap hit for the next 4 years is fantastic for a starting goalie that still has room to grow. The real question is, can the Sharks be a contender with Ned in net?
“We thought there would be a run on goalies earlier but we were wrong, could we have grabbed Ned later? Probably not, we’ve heard there was interest league wide. Overall we’re happy with this decision and believe that behind our group we’re building Ned will be a Vezina calibre goaltender.”
So short answer, yes.
4th Round Selection - Alexander Ovechkin
All in. That’s what this move tells the rest of the league, after going with team friendly contracts the Sharks add a $9,500,000 cap hit to the books with this pick. The greatest goal scorer of all time, Ovi will be paired with McDavid and the Sharks are hoping that it’s a recipe for fireworks.
“I’ll be honest with you we were shocked that Ovechkin was still there for us to pick in the 4th round. Yes he’s on an expiring contract but we will make him feel guilty as fuck if he tries to leave! Having McDavid and Ovi on the same line will put the fear of God into the opposition, all while putting the puck in the net.”
One does wonder if Ovechkin will decide to re sign with the Sharks or walk to UFA, only time will tell…
5th Round Selection - Mattias Ekholm
After adding another big cap hit the Sharks once again went with a team friendly contract, see a theme here? Ekholm is signed for 4 years with a cap hit of $3,750,000 and while he may not be the flashiest d man, he’s a very reliable top pairing option for the Sharks that can do just about anything.
“We may have left a little talent on the table but with what he brings and the fantastic deal he’s on, Ekholm was the right choice here. He’s going to do everything for us, eat top pair minutes, PP, PK, he’s going to see a lot of ice time.”
With 3 forwards, 1 D man and a goalie now selected, the roster is beginning to take shape.
6th Round Selection - Tyson Barrie
One thing the Sharks need on their team is a PP quarterback, someone to feed McJesus and Ovechkin the puck. Enter Tyson Barrie, he may have defensive deficiencies but with what he can bring as a puck moving D you can look past that. Barrie also comes in on a pretty solid deal at $4,500,000 for the next 3 years.
“With Barrie we’re adding an elite playmaking d man. We want to make sure our PP is not only strong but one of the best in the league. Barrie, McDavid, and Ovechkin will all but make that dream a reality.”
7th Round Selection - Adam Pelech
The ying to Barrie’s yang, Pelech is the furthest thing from an elite puck moving D man. He is elite but more so in the shutdown department. Paired with Barrie, they could compliment each other perfectly. His $5,750,000 cap hit might not be team friendly but for an elite shutdown defence man, it’s a solid deal.
“We looked at these back to back picks and saw an opportunity to solidify what we saw as a great second pairing on defence. Pelech can help cover Barries defensive deficiencies and vice versa.”
Not to mention Pelech will help out the PK tremendously.
8th Round Selection - Anders Lee
Another higher cap hit ($7,000,000 for 2 years) Lee brings a scoring and physical element to the second line. With not a ton of high end scoring wingers left on the board, Rensby-Wills had to make his move.
“We really wanted to get someone with a lower cap hit but how can you pass on Lee? Him and Hintz will make our second line tough to play against and will be able to put the puck in the net. While salary is important we believe that icing 2 solid scoring lines is very important when trying to contend.”
Lee, Hintz, Ovechkin, and McDavid…the forward core is shaping up to be big, strong, and skilled.
9th Round Selection - Jaccob Slavin
The Sharks most recent selection was that of two-way defender Slavin. Coming in at a $5,300,000 cap hit, Slavin will help hold down the top pair with Ekholm. Still with some potential, the Sharks are confident that Slavin will grow in this role and become a possible #1 D man down the road.
“We may not possess a true #1 D man right now but our D core is very solid and we believe that Slavin can become the #1 D that we need.”
And with that we have recapped the Sharks dispersal draft so far. We’ve also gotten word that the Sharks have a pending trade to acquire a top 6 winger at a low cap hit…hearing that prospect Thomas Bordeleau and the Sharks 2022 1st round pick could be in play, stay tuned Sharks fans! For now, peep the projected lines down below!
Cheers!
