PFHL SKILLS COMPETITION
The skills competition took place last Friday night at All-Star weekend. The two sides took place in 8 different competitions.
Let’s see who the winners were.
Event # 1
Fastest Skater (with a puck)- unlike the old NHL the PFHL fastest skater was with a puck, heck who cares how fast a guy is if he can’t carry the puck with him. It’s like putting Donovan Bailey or Carl Lewis at wide receiver. Sure, their fast but they can’t catch so whats the point.
Rules: H2H, start at center , deke through 5 cones then around 1 net down around another net back to center. The puck must remain within 3 feet of the skaters stick at all times.
Up first, East Nate Schmidt vs West Shea Theodore. This was a good race, both skaters handled the pucks through the cones and around the nets with easy with Theodore edging out Schmidt by less then a second and setting the bar at 21.023 seconds.
Second pairing had E-Jack Eichel vs W- Cale Makar. The race started but had to be blown dead after Eichel went the wrong way. Not sure he’s completely done with the pain killers yet after neck surgery! When they finally got the big boy headed in right direction, he managed to set the new bar with a 20.567 time. Makar came in at 21.102. Eichel now had the lead in the competition.
Last pairing, E-( high flying) Brayden Point vs W- Connor (the favorite) McDavid, as expected McDavid sizzled in this competition completing the lap in 19.104 seconds a full second ahead of Points 20.213.
As the West celebrated and congratulated McDavid, Marchand called the officials over to the East bench. What could he possibly be whining about now? After viewing the tablet and quick huddle Wes McCauley skated to center ice.
“We have a cheater on the ice, #97 on the West bounced the puck off the end boards and the puck did not remain withing 3 feet of his stick, he has been disqualified!! “
Brayden Point of the East was declared winner!!
Event #2
Fancy Stick Work- simply put who doesn’t like watching guys before the game warming up flipping pucks up in the air and catching them on there stick and doing all those fancy tricks.
We brought in 3 judges know for their hands to judge the competition: Pavel Bure, Jaromir Jagr and of course Tie Domi! They would score out of a possible 10 points each for the team that was most creative, based on originality, height, and ability to keep puck off the ice.
For the East- Brock Boeser, Leon (Big Germ) Draisaitl, Steven Stamkos and Devon Toews. These guys were masterful, flipping pucks up in air, back and forth to each other wheeling around behind the back off the glass stick to stick. At one point I think Stamkos sent it flying high enough in the air he went for a beer and came back before he caught it.
Scores -Bure 9.5, Domi- 9.0 and Jagr-6.3, apparently a young blond had caught Jaromir’s eye in the crowd and he missed half the routine, he had written his phone number on the score card for her and scribbled out the remaining digits for his score .
For the West- Sebastien (I’m a) Aho, Bo Horvat, Mitch Marner and Mikko Rantanen. These 4 performed well, again doing the tricks you see every night before a game. Flipping the puck up, around, back, forward etc. They definitely were trailing in the competition until their last trick. Horvat scooped the puck off the ice, flipped it back to Rantanen who tossed it to Aho who was breaking to his left and he overhanded it to a streaking Marner 30 feet down the ice who caught the puck on his stick. The old halfback option!
That drew to 10’s from Bure and Domi and another 6.3 from Jaromir as he was busy chatting up a brunette sitting behind him!
Event #3
Breakaway Challenge – each team takes penalty shots at each goalie. All members of the opposing team come in one after another in rapid fire formation on each of the 3 goalies.
Most of the players tried to use trick shots ie between the legs, one handed etc. The two best shots were Wests Andrei Svechnikovs lacrosse goal over the left shoulder of East Jeremy Swayman and Blake Coleman shooting the puck from just inside center into the net while Mike Smith had turned around to dig yet another puck out of the net that went by him.
Final Saves Total East-Vasilevsky 10 of 19, Swayman 9, Rask 8. For the West Oettinger 14 to claim 1st, Francouz 13 and Mike Smith 5. For reference the Shooter Tudor stopped 6!!
Event #4
Accuracy Challenge H2H – each participant receives passes from teammate and attempts to hit 4 targets as quick as possible in a H2H matchup.
The H2H opponents: E- Kucherov vs W- Barkov, E- Marchand vs W- Pastrnak, E-Burakovsky vs W-Panarin, & E- Gallagher vs W-Matthews
Round #1 – Kucherov receives great passes from Stamkos and hits the 4th target as Barkov is on his 3rd
Former Bruins teammates faceoff. Marchand is leading Pastrnak heading into the 3rd target when a mysterious guy in a mask skates up to Marchand and licks his face throwing his whole rhythm off and Pastrnak goes onto win. Upon leaving the ice the man pulls the mask from his face and Ryan Callahan is exposed shouting “paybacks are a bitch!!!”
Upon receiving passes from his teammate Malkin, Panarin picks the 4 targets off in 4 shots while Burakovsky still trying to fumble around to receive the chest high passes from Yanni Gourde .
Matthews against Gallagher! Gallagher asks to stand 2 feet in front of the net where he scores most of his goals. Referee Wes McCauley allows it as long as he keeps his feet out of the blue paint. Matthews misses every target (this writer may hate the pedophile look -a-like) . Gallagher jams the last one into bottom left corner and McCauley rules good target hit! Gallagher onto the semis!
Semis- Kucherov vs Pastrnak.. wow this is fantastic matchup. Pastrnak wrings the potential game winning shot off the bar just before Kucherov hits his 4th target. Kucherov is off to the final.
Panarin vs Gallagher. again Gallagher sets up in front of net, but doesn’t matter as Panarin hits 4 targets in 4 shots. He is on fire!!
Final- E-Kucherov vs W-Panarin- billed to be good fight. both players hit 3 of 3 before Kucherov misses his 4th. Panarin nails his 4th target on 4th shot again to go 12 of 12 and win it for the West!!
Of note Jaromir misses the whole competition, hes trying to nail the redhead in Section 119 Row 1 B!!
Time for the Skills Intermission, West leads Skills 3 to 1!!
