Well that was a wild 1st period ending in a 5-4 lead for the West with the Chicago line scoring all 5 goals for the West Coasters. We also saw a record distance in the Olympc Watter Bottle Toss, saw Vasilevsky slash a team mate, and Svechnikov thinks he is a duck after a severe beating from Ekblad. Let's see if the 2nd has as much action as the 1st. In goal are Smith for the West and Swayman for the East.
Second Period Play-by-play
- After some feeling out and defensive play the East gets a long breakout pass from Pietrangelo springing Barakovsky on a break away! He pulls a perfect Datsyuk but Mike Smith stacks the pads and kicks the puck away from the top corner.
- However Eichel comes swooping in and has a gaping net only for Smith to roll over on his back and snatch the puck blind freezing play.
- Pettersson wins the offensive zone draw , Schmidt over to Gourde who one-times it but Smith comes sliding across with a stunning skate save.
- The rebound ends up in the corner where Boeser recovers and spots a pinching OEL back door but Smith comes firing across the other way with a blocker save.
- Puck out of play. Who is this miracle ninja in net for the West? The crowd is chanting SMITH-SMITH-SMITH-SMITH.
- GM of the Flames, Sean McAndrews, appears very pleased in his private suite but it could be the 15 hookers in there that have put that grin on his face.
- With the face off in the West end Mark Stone wins a face-off (why is Mark Stone playing centre by the way? Nice one Dean.
- Sam Girard does a quick turn in the corner and catches sight of Marner streaking down the boards. Girard fires the puck all the way down the ice for a Sedin where the puck bounces back into the slot.
- Marner is in on an incredibly creative break away. He toe drags Swayman then dishes a back handy saucy to a wide open Aho who taps it into the gaping cage. GOAL!!! at 15:30 6-4 West
- An incredibly frustrated Draisaitl tells Stamkos he is a better centre than he is and tells Stammer to take the wing. Draisaitl wins the draw back to Schmidt who quickly passes it up to Stamkos.
- Stamkos shoots an absolute laser beam off the rush but again Mike Smith is there! "SMITH-SMITH-SMITH-SMITH" goes the crowd.
- Off the draw Eichel goess to Mcavoy who goes cross ice to his d partner Toews. Toews down low to Burkovsky. Burkovsky with a bank pass behind the net to Coleman.
- Coleman with a one touch pass to Eichel in the low slot who plays the bumper to Mcavoy who hammers a slap shot top block side..............
- BUT SMITH IS THERE!!!!!!!!! WHAT A SAVE!!!!! "SMITH-SMITH-SMITH-SMITH" Sean McAndrews grin gets a little larger.
- We are nearly halfway through the period and there has been more back and forth play. The "Kiss Cam" at commercial break had one of those hilarious spontaneous moments where a boyfriend refuses to kiss his girlfriend and then the guy on the other side of her makes out with her hard much to the chagrin of her boyfriend.
- When play resumes Alex Barkov finally gets a touch of the puck. He makes a good defensive play and chips the puck to Kadri who fires it cross ice to Svechnikov. Unfortunately Svechnikov still thinks he is a duck and is skating around in circles in the neutral zone.
- Barkov makes yet another great defensive play and chips the puck to Cale Makar this time.
- Makar looks to an open Svechnikov but he is now lying at center ice making snow angels
- Makar proceeds to do laps around the rest of the Eastern players holding the puck for an astounding 3 minutes before doing a final end to end and roofint it on a bewildered Swayman GOAL!!! at 7:52 of the 2nd 7-4 West.
- There is more play and another astounding 8 highlight reel saves from "SMITH-SMITH-SMITH-SMITH" It looks like the East might be in trouble.
- With time winding down in the period McDavid wins a draw at center ice straight back to Smith. Smith says "fuck it, I might as well try to score too!!!!"
- Smith rifles the puck hitting Klefbom in the back of the head causing the puck to go straight into the top right hand corner of the net. GOAL!!!! awarded to Alex Ovechkin who was the closest player to the play although on the bench. 7-5 West with 3:22 left in the 2nd.
- Well that was weird. Off the ensuring draw Marchand dumps the puck into the West's zone. It hits a stantion, Smith blows a wheel and the puck slides harmlessly into the net. GOAL!!!! at 2:17 of the 2nd 7-6 West.
- After some frenzied play the West draws a delayed penalty after some stellar play from McDavid, Pastrnak, and Matthews (first mention for him)
- On the delayed penalty Matthews fires a bad pass to Theodore at the point and it gets past him. Smith was on his way to the bench and he can't get back.....oh no!!!!! GOAL!!! awarded to Alex Ovechkin who was the closest player to the the play although he was on the bench (no one else for the East touched the puck that shift). 7-7 tie at 0.19 of the 2nd!!!
- Ryan Craig (the coach for the West) sets a new record by javelining a stick onto the ice. It gets remarkably close to Smith for some reason.
- End of period.
What a period! A 7-7 tie going into the third. After a remarkable first period for the Chicago line they saw very little ice for the West. When asked why coach Craig had this to say, "Well I gave them 15 seconds to start the game and they scored three and then they got another 30 seconds and they scored 2 but the next few times I gave them 15 seconds at a time they did sweet crap all. If they aren't willing to give a consistent effort then they are going to watch those that do. At least I know what I am going to get from Svechnikov every shift. Is it pretty? No. Does he know where he is? No. Can he spell his own name? No one can. But at least I know what I am going to get."
The media also talked to coach Quinn to see what he though of his teams performance through two periods. "Well thank god that guy on the other side is only playing the Chicago line for 75-90 seconds per period. I am proud of my guys. I was worried when Smith was making highlight reel saves all over the ice. I told the guys, forget the cross ice one timers, back door plays, 17 pass dingle dangles. Just dump it in somewhere and the puck will find its way in! And it did!"
A really interesting 3rd is coming up. Stay tuned!!!!
