In a shocking display Evander Kane did something completely out of character in the Flames last game. Reportedly Kane told referee Wes McCauley that he was going to take McCauley's mother "out for a nice seafood dinner and never call her again." Understandably McCauley lost it and immediately tagged Kane for a 5 minute major for abuse of an official and a 10 minute misconduct. The league office was apparently shocked at Kane's actions as well and released this statement. "We are deeply disturbed by Kane's comments. There is no place in hockey, pro sports, or life in general for statements like that. Despite Kane being a fine player, model citizen, and a role model for kids everywhere, we had no choice but to suspend him for 3 games."
What will this mean for the Flames? Well the beneficiary will be Robbi Fabbri who is expected to be elevated up to the 2nd line with Krejci and Tatar who have both been pleasant surprises for the Flames so far. Elias Lindholm has moved to the first line with Monahan and Oshie who have both been a little cold lately. The silver lining in this is that the Flames were probably due for a bit of a shake up as they have been treading water in the last 10 with a 6-4 record. They still have a comfortable hold on a playoff spot but they have seen the red hot Kings blast past them for the division lead and the pesky Canucks could surpass them as well.
Mike Smith is expected to be back between the pipes against the Arizona Desert Dogs after Sergei Bobrovsky had another shaky outing last time out. Don't expect any changes to the defensive pairings and Dominik Kahun draws back into the lineup ion the 4th line. Veteran Derek Stepan will center the 3rd line in the spot vacated by Fabbri.
In other news, the Flames are still rumored to be looking for a middle six forward with a reasonable cap hit. It is believed that they were originally looking for a player under 25 but after a lack of success in the market they are considering some grey-balls as well. It is believed picks and prospects , including high end prospect Gregori Denisenko, are on the block to acquire such a player. The Flames are tight on cap space making it a challenge to make such a move but we will see what transpires.
