GM Houghton held a press conference this afternoon where it was announced that he had traded struggling netminder Tristian Jarry to the Nashville Predators in exchange for Pavel Francouz. Jarry had struggled since day 1 in Dallas and had recently lost his starting roll to Kevin Lankinen who has been a pleasant surprise so far this season. Jarrys numbers with the Stars ballooned to a 3.69 GAA and a .883 S% before the trade. GM Houghton had been in on the goalie market for some time and was finally able to pull the trigger Sunday afternoon in what was a pretty short exchange with GM Kyle Bowden.
"We wish Jarry all the best with the Preds. It's unfortunate that it didn't work out here. We had really high hopes for him that just never came to fruition. A couple weeks ago we figured it would be in the best interest for everyone to look at different opportunities and that finally materialized today" GM Houghton stated. "With him being an upcoming free agent and paired with his struggles it was becoming a tougher sell to commit to the contract he was looking for. With this new opportunity, I'm sure he will rebound and haunt us for years to come, that's usually how trading with division rivals works out for me. I hope nothing but the best for him, its sad having to give up the Jerry memes as well" Houghton added.
In Francouz the Stars get a slight upgrade in the goaltending position for this year along with cost certainty for the next 3 1/2 years as Pavel only counts 2M against the cap.
Houghton went in to say, "We are extremely happy to bring Pavel into our organization. We were targeting him in the dispersal draft before he was taken just a few spots before us so we are glad he is finally part of our team. Anytime you can upgrade a position and save some pennies short and long term it's a positive. Yes, we sacrificed some long term potential in moving out Jarry in the deal, but having the cost certainty for the long term is extremely important."
"We feel that Frank can help insulate Lank and be that tandem we were hoping for since the season began. Lankinen has exceed expectations so far for us this season and will continue to get his fair share of starts, but we are also hoping that Frank can create some healthy competition between the pipes and force the coaching staff to make some tough decisions" the GM concluded.
